How to Open HEIC Files on Windows

Why Windows can't open HEIC files

If you've transferred photos from an iPhone to a Windows PC and seen files with the .heic extension that won't open, you're not alone. This is one of the most common compatibility issues between Apple and Windows devices.

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default photo format since iOS 11. Windows, however, does not natively support HEIC. When you double-click a HEIC file on Windows, you typically see an error message or a blank preview.

This happens because HEIC uses the HEIF container format with HEVC (H.265) compression — a codec that Microsoft does not bundle with Windows by default.

Method 1: Install the HEIF codec (Windows 10/11)

Microsoft offers a free extension that adds HEIC support to Windows:

1. Open the Microsoft Store on your Windows PC
2. Search for "HEIF Image Extensions"
3. Click Get or Install (it's free)
4. You may also need "HEVC Video Extensions" for full support
5. Restart the Photos app and try opening your HEIC file again

After installation, Windows Photos and File Explorer thumbnails should display HEIC images. However, this method has limitations:

• Not all Windows apps support HEIC even with the codec installed
• Email clients, web browsers, and older software may still fail
• The extension may not be available in all regions
• Corporate PCs with restricted Microsoft Store access cannot install it

Method 2: Convert HEIC to JPG (recommended)

Converting HEIC files to JPG is the most reliable solution. JPG is universally supported by every operating system, app, and website.

Step-by-step conversion

1. Transfer HEIC files from your iPhone to your Windows PC (via USB, iCloud, or AirDrop alternative)
2. Go to jpgconvert.io/convert/images/heic-to-jpg
3. Drag and drop your HEIC files into the upload area (up to 30 files)
4. Wait a few seconds for automatic conversion
5. Download individual JPG files or all files as a ZIP

The entire process takes less than a minute for a batch of photos. No account creation, no software installation, and files are automatically deleted after processing.

Method 3: Use iCloud for Windows

If you use iCloud Photos, the iCloud for Windows app can sometimes handle HEIC files:

1. Install iCloud for Windows from the Microsoft Store
2. Enable Photos in iCloud settings
3. Choose "Download photos as JPEG" in the iCloud Photos options

This setting automatically converts HEIC to JPG when syncing photos to your PC. However, it only works for photos synced through iCloud — not for HEIC files received via email, USB transfer, or other methods.

Method 4: Use third-party software

Several desktop applications can open and convert HEIC files on Windows:

• CopyTrans HEIC — Free plugin for Windows Photo Viewer
• iMazing HEIC Converter — Free standalone converter
• XnView MP — Free image viewer with HEIC support

These require downloading and installing software, which may not be ideal on work computers or devices with limited storage.

Which method should you choose?

For most users, converting HEIC to JPG online is the fastest and most reliable option. You get files that work everywhere — Windows Photos, email, websites, print services, and any other application.

Preventing HEIC issues in the future

To avoid HEIC compatibility problems going forward, change your iPhone camera settings:

1. Open Settings on your iPhone
2. Go to Camera → Formats
3. Select "Most Compatible" instead of "High Efficiency"

This makes your iPhone save photos as JPG instead of HEIC. The trade-off is slightly larger file sizes, but you'll never have compatibility issues again.
