Why convert iPhone photos to JPG?

Every iPhone since iOS 11 saves photos in HEIC format by default. While HEIC is excellent for storage on your phone, it creates problems when you need to use those photos elsewhere:

• Windows PCs often cannot open HEIC files without extra software
• Email and messaging apps may reject or fail to display HEIC attachments

From your computer

1. Transfer photos from iPhone to your computer:
   • Windows: Connect via USB → open File Explorer → iPhone → Internal Storage → DCIM
   • Mac: Connect via USB → open Finder → select your iPhone → Photos tab
   • iCloud: Enable iCloud Photos and download from icloud.com

Use the iOS Shortcuts app

Create a shortcut that converts HEIC to JPG on your iPhone:

2. Create a new shortcut with "Convert Image" action
3. Set output format to JPEG
4. Run the shortcut on selected photos

This works offline but processes one photo at a time, making it slow for large batches.

Use iCloud automatic conversion

If you use iCloud for Windows:

1. Install iCloud for Windows
2. In Photos settings, enable "Download photos as JPEG"
3. Photos synced from iCloud will automatically be saved as JPG on your PC

This only affects photos synced through iCloud, not photos transferred via USB or received from others.

When converting many iPhone photos at once:

• Use ZIP download — After converting up to 30 photos, download all JPG files as a single ZIP archive instead of saving each file individually.
• Organize before uploading — Group photos by event or date before batch converting to keep your JPG files organized.
• Check file sizes — HEIC files are typically 1–3 MB. The converter accepts files up to 10 MB each.
• Keep originals on iPhone — Convert copies for sharing. Your iPhone keeps the original HEIC files with full quality.

What about Live Photos?

Live Photos contain both a HEIC image and a short video clip. When you convert a Live Photo's HEIC component to JPG, you get a still image — the motion component is not included. If you need the video, export the Live Photo as a video file separately through the iPhone Photos app.
